How common is depression?
Depression is a serious mental health condition that can significantly alter a person's daily functioning. It encompasses a broad range of symptoms that extend beyond feelings of sadness; it can lead to physical ailments, difficulties in concentration, and alterations in sleep patterns. Individuals may find themselves withdrawing from social interactions, neglecting responsibilities, and struggling to maintain their regular routines.
The impact of depression on relationships can be particularly profound. The feelings of isolation often lead to difficulties in communication with loved ones, and the sense of worthlessness may prevent individuals from reaching out for support. This can create a cycle where the individual feels increasingly disconnected and alone, further exacerbating their condition.
In the workplace, depression can lead to decreased productivity, frequent absenteeism, and challenges in maintaining professional relationships. Understanding the multifaceted nature of depression is crucial for effectively addressing its effects. A comprehensive approach, including therapy and support, can help individuals navigate through this challenging time and work towards reclaiming their sense of self and improving their overall well-being.
How is our Depression Counseling different?
Talking alone isn’t enough. It can help you feel better temporarily, but lasting change requires a more structured approach. Our years of training and certification in various therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), allow us to provide treatments that are not only effective but can also yield results relatively quickly, especially for individuals dealing with depression.
Our minds are constantly at work, churning out thoughts at a rapid pace. It’s nearly impossible to recognize and be aware of every single one of them. While we acknowledge that making absolute statements can be tricky, we can confidently say that simply deciding to monitor our thoughts isn’t enough. Developing awareness and effective coping strategies takes practice. Fortunately, with consistent effort, it is manageable and can fit easily into your daily routine.
It's important to recognize that our thoughts often dictate our emotional state, acting as the driver on the road to how we feel. By incorporating evidence-based therapeutic practices, we can help you take control of your thoughts, leading to the emotional wellness that you deserve.
Changing our thoughts is a crucial first step in addressing mental health challenges, but it’s equally important to modify our responses to situations we encounter. Sometimes, simply talking about our issues may not yield the desired changes or relief. This doesn't mean that our responses are inherently negative; rather, they may not be the most effective in facilitating our healing and growth.
By adopting a skills-based approach, we can equip you with practical tools and strategies that can be applied in real-life scenarios. These tools are designed not only to help you cope with immediate challenges but also to foster long-term growth and resilience. Once you’ve learned and integrated these skills, they can serve you throughout your life, enhancing your ability to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional hurdles effectively.
The great news is counseling for depression is proven to be one of the best ways to feel better!
Research studies have shown that medication alone is not always the answer—or enough. In fact, the most effective way to treat and recover from depression is through a combination of medication and therapy. Many people can be misled into thinking that simply taking a pill can change or “fix” their depression. However, the reality is that medications often need to be adjusted or changed over time, as they may stop being effective.
Moreover, medications do not address the root causes of depression on their own. While medication can be life-saving and certainly has its role in depression treatment, it should be viewed as a more short-term solution. In contrast, depression therapy offers a more comprehensive and longer-term approach to healing. Through therapy, individuals can explore underlying issues, develop coping strategies, and build resilience, leading to a more sustainable recovery.
What if I don’t have the energy to do Depression counseling?
Depression therapy represents the longer-term approach. Change requires action. While we don't have a magic solution to instantly provide the energy needed for counseling, we encourage you to reflect on this: if you had the energy to read this far, perhaps you have the energy to take another step. We say this with complete compassion and understanding! The perception of feeling drained often does not reflect the full reality of your situation.
All you need to do is reach out to us, and we will guide you through the next steps. We can’t make the call for you, but we can support you as you take each step toward healing. It may take some action to change how you feel, but remember, these can be taken in small, manageable steps. Healing is not about making drastic changes all at once; it unfolds gradually, one step at a time. Isn’t it worth feeling better?
Regarding our sessions, we offer online counseling as an accessible option. These sessions can feel like having a conversation with a good friend who happens to possess the skills to help you navigate your path forward.
Depression counseling is a highly-effective solution because it helps heal you by integrating multiple approaches all in one depression treatment plan. This holistic method combines therapy techniques, mindfulness practices, and lifestyle adjustments tailored to your unique needs. By addressing the emotional, psychological, and situational factors contributing to depression, you can develop a deeper understanding of your experiences and learn coping strategies that resonate with you. Additionally, this integrated approach fosters personal growth and resilience, providing you with the tools to navigate life’s challenges effectively. Embracing depression counseling can lead to a transformative journey toward improved mental health and overall well-being.
Counseling can effectively address depression stemming from current life situations, the thought processes that sustain it, and provide you with practical, easy-to-learn skills that you can seamlessly incorporate into your daily routine.
In some cases, individuals may experience rapid relief from depressive symptoms, while others may require a more extended period of support. However, many people notice positive changes relatively quickly with consistent effort. If you commit to your healing process—even on days it feels daunting—there is a strong possibility that you will begin to feel an improvement.
For those dealing with more complex forms of depression, we collaborate with your physician to tailor an approach that best meets your needs. While outcomes can never be guaranteed due to the uniqueness of each individual's experience, our commitment is to provide the guidance and support you seek.

Symptoms often treated using Depression counseling:
People who are diagnosed with clinical depression have a combination of symptoms from the following list:
Feelings of hopelessness, even when there is reason to be hopeful
Fatigue or low energy / Much less interest or pleasure in most regular activities
Low self-esteem / Feeling worthless
Excessive or inappropriate guilt
Lessened ability to think or concentrate / Indecisiveness
Thinking distorted thoughts
Weight loss or gain without dieting / Change in appetite
Change in sleeping patterns
Recurrent thoughts of death and/or suicidal thoughts
Feelings of restlessness or being slowed down
When a person is suffering from depression, these symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. This means that the person’s family and social relationships, as well as work life, are impaired.
When a person is suffering from depression, symptoms such as these are not the result of a chronic psychotic disorder, substance abuse, general medical condition, or bereavement.
Physical Causes
Depression may be associated with physical events such as other diseases, physical trauma, and hormonal changes. A person who is depressed should always have a physical examination as part of the assessment process to determine the role of physical causes. We ask all our clients to have a complete physical through their primary physician if they have not yet done so.
We are trained and experienced in a variety of depression treatment approaches. The following are just some of the modalities we utilize:
Cognitive Therapy
You learn to identify and change unproductive thought patterns by observing your feelings and learning to reframe and develop a more helpful perspective.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Utilizing the skills taken from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, we can help reduce depression by teaching and building skills that focus on being more present-focused, assertive and identify thoughts that may lead us into unproductive thought cycles. In turn, we can teach your strategies to help develop new ways of coping and how to be more aware, and in charge of, your thoughts and behaviors.
Relaxation Training/Mindfulness
Many people with depression benefit from self-hypnosis, guided visualization, and progressive relaxation techniques to help combat any stress that may be causing and driving the depression.
